When I was in college, someone told me about an assignment they had been given in a history class. The professor had handed out 6 different descriptions of the same battle. The students had to come up with their best estimate of what really happened, balancing out the differences in terms of who could have been expected to know what, how feasible different accounts were, who would be expected to exaggerate or lie, and so on.
