The offer can be tempting for holiday shoppers: Apply for a store credit card and save 10 percent or more on your purchases. But a $20 savings on a $200 gift could cost thousands of dollars if that new piece of plastic tanks your credit score.
Generally, adding more debt responsibility will lower your credit score, at least until you've proven you will pay off your credit-card bills on time. And a lower score could make it more expensive to get a loan for a new car or home in the new year.
